We are well into 2021 and focus on New Year's resolutions at the start of every year.
One of the most popular resolutions made on New Year's Day is to lose weight.
That was undoubtedly one of my resolutions, and unfortunately, my pursuit of a healthier me has already hit a few roadblocks.
Hopefully, the animals in this video can have a better go at watching their weight than I did.
We are going to take a look at ten of the fattest animals in the world.
When you think of obese animals, camels probably are not high on your list. However, those lovely humps have landed them at number ten on our list.
How many of you think that a camel's hump is made of water? Most of us buy into the myth that camel humps store water to help them survive in their desert habitat.
Nope! The camel's hump is used for the storage of fat. Food sources can be scarce for camels.
The camel can store up to 80 lbs. of fat in their humps to use as an emergency source of nutrition when food supplies run low.
Their humps aren't the only thing that puts them on our list. A fully grown adult camel can weigh more than 1300 lbs.
Porker, piggy, hog- Unfortunately, if you have a bit of a weight problem, the odds are high that you have been called one of these names.
People can be cruel, and I never really understood why pigs had such a negative rep, but I digress.
Pigs give us some of our most beloved foods like bacon, ham, and sausage. They are also barnyard cuties.
However, these little guys can put a strain on the scale.
Despite usually being no more than 2 ft tall, their weight can range from 300- 700 lbs. That is a whole lot of bacon.
Bears are other animals, unfortunately, described by their weight.
Brown bears eat as much as possible during the warm summer month in hopes of packing on pounds to keep them warm during the winter.
During colder winter months, when animal food sources are scarce, bears hibernate to conserve energy.
When the temperatures drop under 30 degrees, I also wish to curl under my blankets and sleep my day in comfort and warmth.
Weight gain in preparation for their long winter slumber makes them technically obese.
These functionally obese forest dwellers weigh up to an average of 800 lbs.
Brown bears weigh so much that a Fattest Bear competition is held in Alaska's Katmai National Park.
In this competition, fans vote on which bear has gained the most during the season.
Blubber is another term associated with being overweight.
What exactly is blubber? Blubber is a thick layer of fat tissue found directly under the skin of marine mammals used as stored energy.
Now that we know what blubber is and why it's helpful, let's talk about the animal in our number seven spot.
Elephant seals are large marine mammals found in cold frigid waters.
Since they spend most of their time in the cold icy water rather than on land, it makes sense that 40 percent of their body is composed of fat.
Southern elephant seals found in Antarctica's waters often spend as much as 2 hours underwater, thanks to their fat deposits.
Elephant seals can grow to heavyweights of 4.5 tons and be 20 ft tall.
The Gaur or Indian Bison is a native of South and South East Asia. They are close relatives of your friendly farm-living milk cow.
Considered the world's largest bovine, Gaur can weigh more than a ton. These powerful animals have few natural predators as adults.
However, in their youth, crocodiles, tigers, leopards, and other large animals often prey on them.
Gaur is now on the brink of extinction as a prized target of game hunters.
Rhinoceroses are another animal species that have been hunted to near extinction.
These African natives are sought after for their horns used in medications and decorations.
Human population growth is also a danger to rhinoceros' habitats.
Rhinoceros are plant-eating browsers. Their diets include leaves, buds, plant shoots, bushes, and trees.
White Rhinos are a rhino species less than 6 ft tall but can weigh between 1.6 and 4 tons.
One of the most popular children's board games is "Hungry, Hungry Hippos."
If you are unfamiliar with the rules, this game has 2- 4 players with hippos of various colors racing to eat the most food balls on the board.
Why is a childhood game implying that hippos are always hungry?
Well, I guess that would be because hippos do eat a lot. A hippo can eat 150 lbs. of grass in one night.
That is about 50,000 sq ft of grass. What a gardening nightmare!
Why does an animal that spends most of its day submerged underwater need to eat so much?
If you weigh as much as 8000 lbs., you must need a lot of food energy.
Now that we are at the top of our list, what animals are you expecting to be in our top three?
I must admit that I was surprised by a few animals on our list. Who would have thought camels were not stockpiling water in those humps?
I was hoping you could take a second to drop down to our comments section and let me know what you have thought about our list so far.
Can you guess which animal will be in our top spot?
Asian elephants are the largest land mammal found in Asia.
While smaller than their African cousins, Asian elephants still grow to impressive sizes. These elephants can grow to be up to 6 tons.
These animals also have an extremely healthy appetite. Asian elephants have a diet of grass, bark, and leaves.
However, they are even tempted by bananas, rice, and sugarcane. Sweets are just hard for anyone to resist.
Their massive bodies need a lot of food consumed to survive. Female elephants eat 330 lbs. of food and 30 gallons of water daily, while males consume twice.
The top two spots on our lists are classified as the largest animals on land and in water. Do you have any guesses?
I think the animal at number two was previously spoiled. In our second spot, we have the cousin of the Asian Elephant, the African Elephant.
African Elephants are both tall and heavy. This herbivore is the largest land animal.
There are two species of African Elephants: Savannah and forest. Savannah elephants are a little larger than forest elephants.
Growing to exceed 11 ft tall and weighing more than 6 tons, these animals must consume large amounts to survive.
Elephants must consume at least 4%- 7% of their body weight by proportion.
What animal is considered even larger than the dinosaurs that once roamed Earth? The blue whale is the largest animal ever found on Earth.
An enormous blue whale was recorded at an extraordinary 110 ft. in length. These massive marine animals are primarily between 70 to 90 ft in length.
This length is still more than two school buses, six mid-sized cars, and 15 6ft tall men standing end to end.
Blue Whales also weigh a lot. The average weight of adult blue whales is between 100-150 tons.
Looking back to the number two animals, Blue Whales' weight is more than 14-21 African Elephants.
Blue whales weigh over 85 mid-sized cars, eight school buses, and 1,000 200 lb. men.
Blue Whales are filter feeders; as we have seen with the other animals on our list, giant creatures need a lot of food to survive. Blue Whales consume 8000 lbs. of krill daily to support their massive weight.
One thing in common with all the animals on this list is that they eat and eat and eat more to survive.
Massive size requires an enormous amount of food energy.
What was shocking to me is that most of the largest animals eat plants, not meat. What did you think about that?
